What Size Solar Panels Do You Need?

Solar panels come in different sizes. And when we talk about sizes, we generally refer either to the number of watts a certain panel can produce, or to its physical size. The two of them are related, because the more watts a panel can produce, the larger it is.
Deciding on the size of your solar system depends on two factors: how much electricity your house uses, and the money you are ready to invest in the solar system. Solar systems can be quite expensive and, even though they pay for themselves in time, buying all the panels to power an entire house can be financially out of reach for many families.
The size of an average solar system
Just to give you an idea, an average solar panel can produce around 150w. A 150w panel is about 1 square foot in size. What you should always have in mind is the fact that the panel is able to produce that much energy only on perfect sunny days, when the sunlight falls directly on it. Therefore, your panel will produce 150 watts only 3-4 hours every day (when the sun is brightest), depending on the insulation of the area where you live in.
A solar system's size is calculated in kwp, an abbreviation for kilowatt peak. A 1.5 kwp system can produce 1500 watts on peak sun hours. Such a system would be comprised of 10 solar panels of 150w each and occupies 10 square feet of roof space. A 1500 wp solar system cannot provide all the necessary energy for an average household, but it would do a decent job providing a part of it.
This is just an example, and it might not apply in your case. Unfortunately, a typical house uses a lot of energy, and if you wanted to supply all the energy with the help of a solar system, you would have to pay thousands of dollars on it. The best thing would be to find a compromise solution that relieves at least some of the energy demands of your house.
If a solar system that would provide all the energy your house needs is too large in size, and you either have not enough space or not enough money to afford it, there are a few solutions you could try. One of them would be to reduce your energy usage. You can also buy energy efficient appliances for you house. Another idea would be to buy the solar panels one at a time, when you have the money. Other financial solutions are also available, like green tax reductions and incentives, so it would be a good idea to get informed about the ones that apply in your state.
