What Do They Really Make Solar Panels Out Of?

While gas as well as other bills continue to climb, more and more folks are starting to look into renewable energy and alternative energy right? Well if you have, then you definitely must have heard something about solar panels (photovoltaic panels), but what are they made of? That is what I am going to teach you now.
Photovoltaic panels are definitely not new by any stretch of the imagination. They have been around for many decades as you probably know. Within just the past decade they have begun to grow in popularity because they are a lot less expensive to produce then they had been a couple of decades back and they are needed more than ever.
Just What Are These Made Of
So let's get to today's subject of what solar panels are made of.
A solar cell (also called photovoltaic cell or photoelectric cell) is a solid state electrical device that changes the energy of light directly into electrical energy by the photovoltaic effect.
These solar cells are constructed together to make solar modules which are used to capture energy from sunlight. When several modules are assembled together, the resulting integrated group of modules all oriented in one plane is referred to in the solar industry as a solar panel.
The Solar Cell Explained
The solar cell functions in three basic steps:
1. Photons in sunlight strike the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials, such as silicon.
2. Electrons (negatively charged) are knocked loose from their atoms, causing an electric potential difference. Current starts flowing through the material to cancel the potential and this electricity is captured. Due to the special composition of solar cells, the electrons are only allowed to move in a single direction.
3. An array of solar cells converts solar energy into a usable amount of direct current (DC) electricity.
Why They Are Great
I believe that photovoltaic panels are a really good thing to have simply because they can help with global warming and high electricity bills amongst other things. As the high demand for renewable energy increases, solar panel technology will get much better and the photovoltaic panel cost will go down.
I also think that when more people become interested in photovoltaic panels, we will see a major movement of individuals creating their own photovoltaic panels and teaching people how to make solar panels very easily. There are already a lot of people that are making their own solar panels.
Photovoltaic will be a very significant part of our society in the future. You have a choice to either board the solar panel train or be left behind. Since you are reading this article, you are already ahead of the curve.
