Solar Energy - Our Government's Involvement

Recently Google shelved plans for their ambitious solar thermal energy project that offered a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to coal powered energy. The thermal solar energy project is one of many renewable energy projects that the company has infested.
Google has spent $168 million on a giant solar farm that Brightsource Energy Inc. has built in Ivanpah, Calif. The idea was to direct sunlight onto a tower that reflected the light onto pipes that run past parabolic mirrors which would produce the energy.
Opponents of solar energy have used Google's decision to abandon the project as another failure in a technology that offers the cleanest, most environmentally friendly energy on the planet.
One of the main obstacles to make cleaner-than-coal energy actually came from the solar energy industry itself. Several energy companies have backed off of the solar thermal technology in favor of photovoltaic cells including the Blythe installation mentioned earlier. The chairman of Spanish utility giant Iberdrola recently blasted solar thermal as senseless.
Prices of the photovoltaic cells used in solar panels and solar energy kits continue to drop making the cells a cheaper option to generate solar energy. This trend in price continues to make it cheaper to build solar energy kits for residential use and off-grid solar energy kits as well.
I reside in the southeastern portion of the United States. Florida was the first state in the region to promote and bring awareness to solar energy that other states in the region are now offering incentives to residents that want to lower their energy bills or simply reduce their carbon footprint on the world.
Solar energy kits are almost everywhere in the southeast now. Most of the huge billboards on roadways in Florida have small solar panels supplying power to the lights. Traffic signs all over the south are powered by solar panels. Many gated residential homes in the area use the technology to power their entry ways.
My point is this: Even though Google has dropped their funding for their solar project doesn't mean the technology isn't still evolving and being incorporated into daily our lives. Let's be honest, energy independence is here it's just a matter of what method that best suits your energy needs. Solar, wind and other green technologies for power can benefit literally any area of the United States or the World for that matter.
If the United State Government were to make a serious investment into alternative energy or if our government were to establish a feed-in tariffs like European countries and Canada have implemented. The tariff essentially offers comprehensive guaranteed pricing structure for renewable electricity production. It also offers stable prices under long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources,
This would be better than our government's ordinary approach to boost a company with tax incentives that cost tax payers money and offers no incentive for the ordinary citizen to invest in renewable energy. The goal of feed-in tariffs is to offer cost-based compensation to renewable energy producers, providing the price certainty and long-term contracts that help finance renewable energy investments.
