Wheelchairs Powered by Solar Energy

Renewable energy usage picking up momentum with an awareness and concerns about global warming, wheelchair users also made some debut attempts to power their unit with Solar Energy. Solar Energy is the light, heat and radiation energy that comes to earth with the sunshine and this is converted into solar power. Using solar cells or photovoltaics, the light energy of sunlight is captured and converted into electrical energy that is stored or used to power electrical systems.
Conflicting claims are coming out from Taiwan University, Australia, England and Dubai to have made the first prototype of solar powered wheelchairs. Based on the principles of conversion of solar power, lot of research is going on and the impact is on wheelchair users also.
In Southern Taiwan University, a team of researchers has evolved a prototype after a systematic study, claiming to be the first of its kind. In Australia, inspired by the solar powered electric cars in the streets, a person devised a wheelchair using solar energy to power its movements. In London, as early as 2002, a solar powered wheelchair design was conceived and put into shape to render practical use. In 2006, another person in Dubai stunned the public with a bulky wheelchair having a big canopy of solar cells looking like a hut drove through the streets. It is an encouraging impulse to put into practice any such innovation for practical application.
Solar powered wheelchairs are basic electric versions with an additional unit of solar energy compliance. Thus, solar cells are incorporated as a hood to harvest solar energy from the sunshine. They convert the solar light energy into electrical energy to the electrical storage batteries, where the energy is stored. This in turn is used whenever necessary. The main requirements are that the solar cells should be exposed to the sunshine as much as possible. Sun light is available only during daytime and the use of these cells is restricted only during sunshine. Yet the storage is of immense use in anytime, day or night.
Though the solar panel is an additional canopy like structure, this is indispensable in harvesting the solar energy. The solar panel serves as a cover from the sun and rain. This reduced the electric power consumption to the extent of 30%. This provided the user with an additional power to cruise through a longer distance. A pair of 20 watt panels are needed to deliver a power of 24 Volts that is sufficient to run or to store electric power for wheelchair. Can this be called the Go Green Wheelchair?
