The Advantages of Solar Energy in the Home

Solar power will play a dominant role in our future, and, as the demand for energy grows each year, we will need energy to sustain our lifestyles and homes. Since fossil fuels are not going to be an option anymore in about a century or so, we must turn to alternative ways to generate power, such as solar panels.
So what could solar energy provide for your home?
  • Solar electricity: living with a solar-electric system is the same as living with grid power, except for the fact that some or all the electricity you use for your home comes from the sun. You do not have to live in a remote area to need a solar panel. Installing one means low or no electrical bills and no blackouts (so having a backup energy source is priceless). Nevertheless, those who choose to install a solar-electric panel have to learn to live within the limitations of the system's design, which does not mean doing without electricity, but rather making adjustments to when and how they use electricity and be more conscientious about it.

  • Solar heating: This system can be used to heat your home, swimming pool or household water. A solar thermal installation can provide up to 85 percent of needed domestic hot water energy. This type of solar system can be either passive (compact) or active (pumped), and when the water temperature in the tank falls below minimum, an auxiliary energy source that is included in the system (a gas or fuel oil central heating system or an electric heating element) is used. Therefore, hot water will always be available. In homes that use solar energy for heating the rooms, the entire house takes the role of a solar collector. If you use materials such as concrete slabs, brick walls, and tile floors when building your house, they will absorb, store and distribute the heat throughout the house at night.

  • Solar lighting: solar systems can collect and distribute sunlight to provide interior illumination. This technology replaces artificial lighting, and, when properly implemented, it can reduce lighting-related energy requirements by 25%. The use of natural lighting as opposed to artificial lighting can be physiologically and psychologically beneficial.
An independent lifestyle and the reliability that a solar system provides are becoming increasingly appealing to homeowners, and since people nowadays are striving for more electronic gadgets, more vehicles and bigger homes, we need a supplementary energy source, which, in time, can completely replace the use of polluting fuels.
