Solar Power Disadvantages

Most people acknowledge that solar power is a great way to generate energy cleanly and efficiently but there are some solar power disadvantages which prevent the high uptake of solar energy generation that Western governments would like.
Cost
Although the price of solar panels is coming down due to the improvement in technology and the increased demand of consumers, solar energy still costs twice as much when mass produced as that of fossil fuels.
For domestic customers there are ways of reducing costs, particularly if your country or state offer incentives to go solar and in the long term, electricity, gas and oil bills will reduce but the initial outlay is quite high.
Sunlight
Almost everywhere has cloud at some time or another but technology has advanced sufficiently that solar cells can still capture the type of light produced by cloudy skies. However, what happens after sunset? To utilise the captured energy after the sun has gone down, you need batteries, which for homes using solar power as their sole energy source, can be pretty huge. On top of that, you need somewhere to put them which doesn't cause a blot on your or anyone else's landscape.
Maintenance
Unless you're a gifted technician, you will have to call out a repair person if your solar system develops a fault. Until they turn up, you will have no power unless you have a backup generator. There aren't too many companies who provide solar system engineers and those who do, often don't offer a twenty four hour call out service.
Solar panels need to be cleaned quite frequently as sap and leaves from surrounding trees and droppings from passing or resident birds can interfere with the panels' ability to capture the maximum amount of sunlight. If your panels are located on your roof, then that can be an additional problem.
Environmental Issues
Even though solar power is considered to be "green" there are still issues surrounding environmental hazards. One concern is the process for production of the required components and another is that the panels themselves as well as the batteries contain toxic substances which need to be disposed of in a controlled fashion in order to avoid an environmental disaster.
Having said all that, solar power disadvantages are far outweighed by its advantages in terms of reducing emissions from fossil fuels and ultimately saving a considerable amount of money on domestic fuel bills. The issues of maintenance and battery storage can be addressed in a number of ways so if you're thinking of installing a solar system for your home, be sure to ask whether you're entitled to a grant from your local authority.
