Solar Energy System - Advantages & Disadvantages of Solar Energy

News Alert: World leaders have announced a joint global effort aimed at eliminating the use of fossil fuels, replacing them with renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar power within the next 10 years.
That would be a great headline but not one we are likely to see. Economies of entire countries would collapse and you know the oil companies would wield their influence to make sure this never happens, unless they can profit from it. Although we cannot always reply on our governments to do what's in our best interest, we do have a choice. Alternative sources such as a solar energy system are readily available for your home, but nothings perfect. Before deciding to go green, here are some things you need to consider.
Advantages of a Solar Energy System:
- The sun will rise tomorrow and the next day, for about another 5 billion years, making solar energy renewable, plentiful and free. That cannot be said for oil and natural gas. Once they're tapped out they're gone... forever. Sure you can keep drilling and hope to find additional oil reserves, but sooner or later that will be gone too. It's also not free, not by a long shot.
- A solar energy system is environmentally friendly and won't pollute the air. That's not that case with fossil fuels which are the leading contributor of greenhouse gases. In fact, our energy providers are the biggest single source of air pollution.
- Solar panels are quiet so they contribute no noise pollution. Compare that to the sound of the drills and pumps needed to get oil from the ground.
- Solar panel maintenance is minimal, virtually no maintenance is required at all. Once installed, there's really not much to worry about.
Disadvantages of a Solar Energy System:
- The initial cost is the main roadblock for many. Although solar energy is free, the cost of installing such a system is prohibitive for many households. A professionally installed solar energy system is very expensive. Although it will pay off in energy savings over time, the initial cash outlay could range into tens of thousands of dollars depending on the size of the system a home would require.
- On a much larger scale, distributing electricity from new solar energy plants will require thousands of miles of brand new high-voltage power lines. This will be necessary in order to move the electricity from the deserts, which is where it will most likely be produced, to the major cities.
Even so, the benefits of solar power easily outweigh any disadvantages, especially if you choose a less costly alternative such as DIY solar panels. You can build and install your own solar energy system for a fraction of the cost of a professionally installed system. Incredible as it sounds, you can pick up most of the supplies you need from your local hardware store and build a solar panel for under $200.
Before you do anything you must have a detailed, easy to follow DIY guide. You will not find the step-by-step guidance you need by reading some articles on the internet. You need solid, quality instructions before you tackle this project. Solar panels are not hard to make and don't require any sort of technical knowledge. To build and install a solar energy system, all you need are some simple hand tools, a few weekends and you can go green and save some green as well off your monthly electric bill.
