Solar Energy in Remote Areas

With the large development and expansion of metropolitan areas, experienced since the early 20th century, came the luxuries of modern lifestyles which are greatly based on the availability of electricity.

However, even if it is true that for thousands of millions of people throughout the planet switching on a lamp is a daily activity one does without giving it a second thought, for many millions more it is not so. In fact, it is estimated that about a third of the world population still does not have access to electricity, mostly those living in remote areas, either by choice, or by lack of it.

In remote areas electricity comes at a huge cost, if it comes at all. The advancement of solar technology can now change this situation. Solar photovoltaic panels are a cost-effective solution for rural and remote areas, where solar energy has the potential of greatly improving the living conditions of people. Solar power improves people's lives by giving them access to an increased time of light (especially useful for school-children), better health and healthcare, access to modern technologies including refrigeration, heating, radio, television, cell phones, computers and the Internet. In fact, in many remote areas solar power has become a way to enliven the rural economies, frequently becoming a new source of income for farmers.

The usefulness of solar power in remotes areas ranges from the private home to schools and clinics. Solar kits are simple to use and of low cost to run in the medium to long term, they are reliable and have a long life, which makes them a very good alternative for power supply in rural areas, both technically and financially.
For those who have holiday homes in remote areas or in places where getting power supply from the grid comes at huge expenses, solar power is also the best option. Remote homes in locations well exposed to sunlight can get reliable electricity to meet basic needs for lighting, radio and television with a simple PV (photovoltaic) system - PV panels, a rechargeable battery to store the energy captured during daylight hours, a charge controller, and the necessary wiring and switches. These are often called SHS (solar home systems).

You may live in a remote area and still enjoy good living conditions and the benefits of modern technologies.
