Is PV Solar Power a Viable Option for You, the Homeowner?

Photovoltaic (PV) solar systems are renewable, alternative energy solutions that convert sunlight into useable electricity. PV solar power for the home have made dramatic leaps in technology and reduction of costs in the last ten years, but is this alternative energy production finally a viable investment for you? I believe it may, or may not be. Let me explain why.
The initial purchase of a PV system can be very costly, but it can easily be seen as an investment, instead of an expense.
Many people look at the significant rebates and tax incentives made available to the homeowner by Federal, State, and local governments for the purchase and installation of an alternative energy production system like PV. Plus, many power companies are willing to give you an additional credit for such an installation, as most of them are also given an incentive from the federal government for an increase in alternative energy systems being added to their grid (assuming yours is indeed connected instead of being a 'stand-alone' system).
All of these monetary incentives have a huge impact in reducing the cost of your system, allowing for a much quicker return on your investment. The question is, is this a smart investment for your home?
First, let's determine the purpose for putting in a PV solar array system into your home's electrical system. The purpose will determine the size and output requirements accordingly. Even using one highly efficient panel can make a difference in your electrical costs. If you want, you can even begin with a few panels for an initial test to see if you like the results.
If you are looking to virtually eliminate your electric bill or even have your local energy provider provide YOU a check for excess power you have provided back into the grid (known as net metering) then a much larger system may be required.
Many factors need to be taken into consideration in determining whether one of these 'green' systems are even an option:
  • Do you own a home where it is allowed (some Home Owners' Associations forbid it)?
  • Do you have sufficient unobstructed sunlight on your South-facing roof?
  • Do you have sufficient roof space (or in some cases, space on the ground) for the PV solar panels to be mounted?
  • Is your home built for energy efficiency in heating, cooling, cooking, etc?
If your answers were all, or mostly, yes to the questions above, then we strongly suggest you contact your local installer for a free estimate and evaluation to determine which system will best suit your needs and take advantage of a significant reduction in your electrical costs today.
