Amorphous and Crystalline Silicon Solar Panels - What to Choose

There are two types of solar panels at the moment. The first type is the crystalline silicon panel. Crystalline solar panels are created with a regulated lattice repeating structure. The huge advantage of this technology is that crystalline solar energy panels are very efficient due to their repeating structure.
Amorphous solar energy panels are built in a different manner. They do not have a crystal structure, and much like glass or obsidian have silicon atoms frozen randomly. The advantage of amorphous solar energy panels is that they are a lot cheaper to produce. Because the crystals are created randomly, it is a lot quicker to grow them.
Both these technologies have their drawbacks too. Crystalline solar panels are expensive to produce because it takes a lot of time for the crystal to be grown according to the pattern. Amorphous panels are a lot cheaper to produce, but they also produce power at a slower rate because they do not the advantage of a pattern.
A few companies are experimenting with hybrids between these two technologies. Sanyo for example has created a solar energy panel that uses both crystalline and amorphous silicon in order to increase efficiency. While this technology is still experimental and very expensive, there has been a huge increase in efficiency as the crystalline silicon uses part of the available sunlight and the amorphous silicon uses the rest.
When making the decision about what type of solar energy panels you should consider your needs. Amorphous silicon solar energy panels are less efficient but they are a lot cheaper. So if you want to simply save some money in the long run this is the choice for you. If you want to go completely off the grid, then you should go with crystalline solar panels as they are a lot more efficient although expensive.
